Indiana Secretary of State Holli Sullivan has failed to get the Republican Party’s nomination to run in the fall election. GOP delegates on Saturday instead nominated Diego Morales, who worked in the governor’s office when Mike Pence led the state. Morales overcame criticism about twice leaving jobs in the secretary of state office after being written up for poor job performance. Morales has called for more voting restrictions and embraced former President Donald Trump’s lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Sullivan was appointed secretary of state in March 2021 by Gov. Eric Holcomb after her predecessor retired. The Democratic nominee for secretary of state is Destiny Scott Wells, an Indianapolis attorney and Army Reserve intelligence officer.

Ryan Zimmerman has become the first player for the Washington Nationals to have his jersey number retired by the club. Zimmerman was honored during an on-field pregame ceremony Saturday before Washington hosted the Philadelphia Phillies. Zimmerman was the first player ever drafted by the new-to-town Nationals in 2005 and made his major league debut later that season. He played his final game in 2021. Zimmerman owns most major offensive career records for the franchise and helped the team win the 2019 World Series. Several former teammates were on hand to help celebrate the occasion.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce equaled her world-leading time of the year in winning the 100 meters in 10.67 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Paris. She was unchallenged at Stade Charlety as she matched her time at the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya last month. The 35-year-old Fraser-Pryce will go for a 10th world championship gold medal in Eugene, Oregon, next month. Stanford will play the loser in an elimination game

Kenny Atkinson has decided not to become the coach of the Charlotte Hornets. Two people with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Saturday that Atkinson has reversed course and will not take over as coach of the Hornets. The decision came more than a week after the Golden State assistant had agreed to a four-year contract. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because neither Atkinson nor the Hornets revealed any details of the talks or agreement publicly.

Thousands of supporters of main opposition party VMRO-DPMNE have gathered in the center of North Macedonia’s capital Skopje to pressure the leftist government to call an election two years before the end of its term. Opposition leader Hristijan Mickoski accused the ruling leftist government of miring the country in corruption, devastating the economy and letting public health and education systems  systems deteriorate. He also warned it against accepting a “treacherous” deal with Bulgaria so that the latter unblocks North Macedonia's bid to join the EU. The rally ended peacefully.

Léon Marchand was watching at home when Budapest last hosted the swimming worlds in 2017. On Saturday, the 20-year-old French swimmer thrilled spectators in the Hungarian capital with a European record as he almost took Michael Phelps’ world record in the men’s 400 medley. Marchand’s time of 4:04.28 was the second fastest ever swum after Phelps’ 4:03.84 at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. It also meant he became the second French swimmer to win a medal in an individual medley at a worlds after his father Xavier, who won silver in the men’s 200 medley in Perth in 1998.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says the Group of Seven leading democracies will make clear at their upcoming summit that Ukraine can expect to receive the support it needs “for as long as necessary.” In an interview with Germany’s dpa news agency published Saturday, Scholz said he wants to use next week’s meeting with fellow G-7 leaders to discuss Ukraine’s long-term prospects. He also called any hope by Russia for a return to normality illusory. Scholz said he also hoped European Union leaders would back Ukraine's bid to join the bloc when they meet in Brussels next week.

Four non-scientific buildings at the Kitt Peak National Observatory southwest of Tucson have been lost in a wildfire, but early indications show other buildings on the property don't appear to be damaged. Buell T. Jannuzi, who leads the Department of Astronomy at the University of Arizona, said the fire didn’t appear to have damaged the telescope and science buildings, though a closer examination of the site hadn’t yet been made due to safety concerns. Crews were planning to assess the damage at the observatory later Saturday if conditions allowed for safe entry into the area. The university is a tenant of the observatory and has had a telescope at the site since 1962.

Errani defeated sixth-seeded Diane Parry 6-3, 6-4. Van Uytvanck hasn’t dropped a set this week and won her only previous meeting with Errani in three sets during the 2018 Fed Cup playoffs. All nine of Errani’s career singles titles came before she served a doping ban in 2017 and 2018.

The Miami Marlins beat Jacob Stallings in salary arbitration, and the catcher will earn $2.45 million this season rather than his $3.1 million request. The decision gave teams a 9-3 advantage with just two cases remaining to be heard next week, involving New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge and Atlanta left-hander Max Fried. Stallings hit .246 last year for Pittsburgh with career bests of eight homers and 53 RBIs, earning $1.3 million. He entered Saturday with a .199 average, two homers and 21 RBIs. Richard McNeill, Gary Klendellen and Fredric Horowitz made the decision on Stallings, a day after hearing arguments.
