Declaring it “National Coffee Day” is kind of like saying it’s “National Air Day.” Sure, we can appreciate it that much more for the occasion, but it’s not like we’re ever taking our caffeine or our oxygen for granted. Buy Side’s extensive coverage of coffee products stems from our love for the stuff. Here you’ll find several of our top-tested products, as well as some personal favorite items. And we’ll be keeping an eye out for specific deals as well, including from Starbucks and Dunkin’, which have had promotions in the past.

A drip maker is the heart and soul of most home coffee setups, so it’s important to have a great one. After testing nine of them, our favorite is the OXO Brew 9-Cup Stainless Steel Coffee Maker, which makes reliable, delicious coffee in just two button pushes. OXO is offering a free bag of Trade Coffee if you purchase directly from its website. The OXO Brew 8-Cup Coffee Maker, Breville’s Precision Brewer 12-Cup Thermal Coffee Maker and Cafe’s Specialty Drip Coffee Maker also make equally excellent cups of coffee in different designs and capacities.

Don’t let the changing seasons stop you from enjoying your cold brew. Making a batch of concentrate at home is incredibly easy with the OXO Brew Cold Brew Coffee Maker, which we found to be the best when we compared it to the top models in the category. OXO has the same free Trade Coffee deal mentioned above going for this maker as well. We also like the OXO Brew Compact Cold Brew Coffee Maker for smaller spaces or making less concentrated coffee at a time, and KitchenAid’s Cold Brew Coffee Maker, which has a built-in spigot for cold brew on tap from your fridge.

Many baristas say a grinder is the second most important part of the coffee-making process, second only to the beans. Baratza’s Encore Coffee Grinder is the one we recommend for most homes because of its quality and consistency. Bodum’s Bistro Burr Coffee Grinder is a great option if you want something less expensive and aren’t as concerned about precisely dialing in your grind size. The Porlex Mini Grinder II and Comandante MK4 Coffee Grinder are our favorite hand-held grinders.

Making espresso at home can seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools it can actually be easier and less expensive than you might expect. The Cuisinox Roma 10-Cup Stainless Steel Stovetop Moka Espresso Maker doesn’t require any specialized skills or even electricity. All you need is some water, some ground coffee beans and about five minutes on the stovetop. We’ve found this moka pot lasts longer than the plastic-handled versions you may be familiar with.

A milk frother is the tool you need if you like to make cappuccinos, lattes or any other milk-based coffee drinks at home. The Instant Milk Frother takes all of the hard work out of the process and delivers near-barista level microfoam in various textures to meet your preferences. Smeg’s Milk Frother makes even higher-quality foam in a gorgeous design, but for a higher price. And if you prefer a manual, hand-held option, go with Subminimal’s NanoFoamer Lithium.

You can’t have great coffee without great coffee beans. When you’re ready to branch out from what your local roastery offers, try ordering some of the top beans from around the country or around the world. Or consider a subscription service such as Seattle-based Bean Box, which will ship beans to your door on a regular basis so that you never run out and is offering a free 12-ounce bag of coffee with any purchase from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 with the promo code “FREECOFFEE.” Trade is offering 25% off a six-bag subscription from Sept. 26 through Sept. 29. Pair a gift subscription with one of our favorite coffee gifts for your coffee-loving friends and family.

Zojirushi’s SM-SA60BA Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Mug is our favorite travel container for hot coffee because it’s astoundingly effective—fresh coffee is always piping hot even after hours of sipping. (In fact, you may want to throw a few ice cubes in when filling it up to moderate the temperature). We recommend Simple Modern’s Insulated Tumbler Cup with Straw Lid and Flip Lid for your cold brew. In addition to its impressive insulation, the included lids and straws ensure you can enjoy wherever, whenever. The huge selection of colors and patterns is a nice bonus, too.

With such great drip machines available today, old-school techniques are often neglected. After all, if you can make coffee of equal quality with much less time and effort, why wouldn’t you? But sometimes it’s nice to take a minute and focus on the task with a brew method like the Chemex. The classic glass coffee maker can brew six 5-ounce cups and all it requires are the right filters and a kettle.

It’s not glamorous, but descaling your coffee maker every few months is essential to keeping it in good working order and making sure your coffee tastes great everyday. Impresa’s Coffee Machine Descaler is a simple solution that gets the job done. Just pour half a bottle into the water reservoir, fill the machine the rest of the way with water, and run a few cycles to flush everything out. You’ll be thankful you did.

A great pull of espresso deserves an equally well-crafted cup to sip or shoot it from. The classic styling of Le Creuset is hard to beat, and the company’s 3-ounce Stoneware Espresso Mug is exactly what you’d expect with the classic colorful, glazed exterior that matches the rest of the company’s kitchenware. Consider the Fortessa Cloud Terre No. 2 Espresso Cups for a more rustic, handle-free design.

One of the keys to consistent coffee is consistent measurements; that scoop that comes with your coffee maker isn’t going to allow you to use the same amount of beans every brew. A scale, like Timemore’s Coffee Scale, is the right tool for ensuring you’re using the right amount of beans day in and day out. Not only is it accurate to 0.1 grams, it also has a built-in timer which is ideal for keeping track of timing when you’re pulling espresso shots or doing a pour-over.

Coffee beans start losing their nuanced flavors as soon as they’re exposed to air, making storage a key concern. Fellow’s Atmos Vacuum Canister for Coffee & Food Storage addresses this with a vacuum seal lid that pulls double-duty: It’s not only airtight, it actually removes the air from inside so that your beans oxidize much more slowly. Choose the 1.2-liter model to be able to hold up to a full pound of beans.

Instant coffee is just never going to compare to a freshly brewed cup you make at home or grab from a cafe. But sometimes it’s your only option for caffeine deliverance, and the freeze-dried crystals have gotten much better in the last decade or so. For my last camping trip I picked up Waka’s Quality Instant Coffee—Medium Roast and was plenty happy to have it fueling my hikes. Consider adding a little less water or choosing a darker roast than you normally would for more aggressive coffee flavor.
